How To Find And Use The Right Social Media Hashtags

RUMORS: There’ve been SO MANY lately! I’m going to break down best practices NOW (remember the algorithm is always changing)⠀⠀

REALITY: You SHOULD ALWAYS be using Hashtags on every post & every story
⠀⠀

WHAT SOCIAL MEDIA HASHTAGS DO: They’re SEO for social media. They provide a roadmap for people to find your posts based on their interests. If you’re not on the map, you’re not going to be found!

CONVERSATION: Hashtags are designed to help people communicate & build community (or they were back in 2014 when I started IG!) USE BRAND’S TAGS tags to join their conversation

HOW MANY: You can use up to 30 hashtags per post. There is no “optimal” number to use. Instead focus on QUALITY hashtags OVER QUANTITY. 5 quality hashtags are better than 30 off-topic ones. But 30 quality ones = best!

QUALITY HASHTAGS: Relate to what is actually IN your image. ALL tags should relate directly to your image, caption & location. Using an off-topic hashtag actually HURTS YOU!! The algorithm reads that you’re not hashtagging properly & will not show your post in results

HOW DO YOU FIND QUALITY SOCIAL MEDIA HASHTAGS?

Focus on who, what & where to find hashtags
💁🏼‍♀️WHO is in the post (what people & brands?)
🎄WHAT is in your photo (a Christmas Tree? A rainbow dress? A tree?) and
🌎WHERE was the photo taken?

Find 3-6 hashtags for who, what & where. ⠀⠀
SEARCH: Then think about what people are thinking about when trying to find content like yours? For an Xmas Tree maybe ChristmasDecorations. Type that in and see what other suggestions you get

STRIVE FOR 5 hashtags over 1 million, 10 over 100K and the rest more NICHE (under 100K)

CHECK EVERY HASHTAG!! They can be overcome with the wrong kind of content. I used to use twinning & stopped when the results were not matching outfits. ⠀⠀ DO NOT USE BANNED HASHTAGS If you use a banned hashtag you will likely cause yourself to be hidden from search

SAVE YOUR HASHTAGS IN NOTES. Check them before you use them & never copy + paste the same list. I spend 2-3 mins redoing my tags for each post. It’s EASY!
